Gamma-Butyrolactone is also called 1,4-Butanolide or 4-hydroxybutyric acid lactone. It is a colorless oily liquid, miscible with water, soluble in methanol, ethanol, acetone, ether, and benzene. It can be volatilized with water vapor, decomposed in the hot alkaline solution, and with a unique aromatic odor.
Use:
Gamma-Butyrolactone is widely used as perfume and pharmaceutical intermediate. As a high boiling point solvent, γ-Butyrolactone has strong solubility, good electrical performance and stability, and it is safe to use. As a proton type strong solvent, it can dissolve most low molecular polymers and some polymers, also can be used as a battery electrolyte, in place of strong corrosive acid solution. It is widely used in the synthesis of fine chemicals such as medicine, spices and so on.
